Legends of Barter

In celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the International Reciprocal Trade Association, in 2009 IRTA created the Legends of Barter Award to recognize certain extraordinary individuals that have served the organized trade industry since 1979.

The Legends of Barter Award is an honor that recognizes those organized trade industry members who have served and helped to shape and define the industry over a period of ten or more years, through positive and identifiable actions. It is an industry wide award and includes individuals from all industry sectors, including Commercial barter, Corporate Barter and the Community Currency Movement. Honorees need not be an IRTA member, current industry member or be present at an IRTA Convention to receive this award.

The following individuals are hereby recognized for their extraordinary efforts during the past forty-five years in shaping and defining the organized trade industry.

Commercial Barter; Corporate Barter 1988-Present

IRTA Paul St. Martin Distinguished Service Award. 4years service IRTA European Board; founding member IRTA European Board. He was one of the first European exchanges to combine elements of commercial barter with the corporate barter process.

Member Barter Hall of Fame, IRTA Paul St. Martin Distinguished Service Award; IRTA Outstanding Achievement Award. 12 years of IRTA Board service; two terms as IRTA Board President; chair of IRTA Ethics and Government Relations Committees. Led in the creation of the IRTA Code of Ethics; very active and productive in the lobbying efforts to pass the Barter Bill of Rights.

Commercial Barter 1992-Present

IRTA Outstanding Achievement Award. 7 years of IRTA Board service; IRTA Global Board Vice President. Secretary, Treasurer. Marketing Committee; member. Certified Trade Broker, Ethics, Universal Currency and Bylaws committees. Led several IRTA presentations and seminars; He participated in the creation and launch of the Universal Currency system by taking a leading role in writing the UC Bylaws and Regulations.

Mark Bastarache

Two IRTA Paul St. Martin Distinguished Service Awards; IRTA Mentorship Award; Numerous IRTA Barter Ambassador Awards. 10 years service on IRTA Board, served as IRTA Board President, Vice President and Treasurer. Participated in and led numerous convention seminars and panels. Was an early proponent of industry use of advanced technology and created and successfully produced some of the first exchange management software.

IRTA Global Board member 4 years, speaker at the IRTA Convention 4 years. Previously CEO of Bartercard New Zealand before launching Bartercard USA as the founding President & CEO. Paul has helped the IRTA Board with his spreadsheet skills allowing for decisions to be made based on accurate forecasting. Paul is an industry expert on the use of social media, videos and new technology and is always will to help other members when asked.

Community Currency 1980-Present

Authored “No More Throw Away People” and “Time Dollars”. Created the concept of Time Dollars and founded TimeBanks USA, a local, tax-exempt currency which is designed to validate and reward the work preformed by volunteers and the disadvantaged in local communities.

Participated in the founding of IRTA; was part of test case that gave rise to 1099-B reporting.

Worked with IRTA (Australasia) and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission on the introduction and enforcement industry regulation in 1997, gained approval from the Australian Bankers Association for the introduction of variable Direct Debit Requests (DDR) 1998 – a first in Australia and now the accepted norm in commerce, worked with the Australian Tax Office (ATO) to develop the Barter Industry Standards for the introduction of Australia’s Goods and Services Tax (GST), 2000, lead the development and introduction of the world’s first processing for value of Barter transactions via Bank EFTPOS networks in 2005, lead and arranged the finance for the $25.5m Management Buy Out (MBO) of Bartercard Australia, 2007, created he Bartercard Charity Foundation as a registered Charity with tax deductable status – only such organization in Australia, 2012.

Founding member of IRTA Corporate Council, central in creating bylaws and standards. Played a significant role in establishing the IRTA Universal Currency System.

Participated in and led numerous convention seminars and panels. Took lead in developing the Universal Currency system; accomplished positive results in both the Corporate Barter and Commercial Barter sectors of the Modern Trade and Barter industries.

Community Currency 1987-Present
As an economist, professor and author he writes and consults on monetary exchange alternatives, including private credit clearing systems, complementary and local currency; Has authored three books: New Money for Healthy Communities; Money and Debt: A Solution to the Global Crisis and his latest, The End of Money and the Future of Civilization. Has made several presentations during IRTA conventions and is active worldwide working with and developing Community Currency systems.

Commercial Barter 1976-2003

Member Barter Hall of Fame; IRTA Paul St. Martin Distinguished Service Award and several other Industry pioneer awards; 15 years of IRTA Board service; was a founding member of IRTA and served on the first IRTA Board. He chaired several IRTA committees, Ethics, Contracts, Membership, and Governmental. He took a leading role in the successful effort to secure the legal standing and win government recognition of our industry.

Played a significant part in the lobbying effort in Washington, to pass Barter Bill DC 1982-83. Was central in establishing and forming the Universal Currency system.

Corporate Barter 1954-2009

Member Barter Hall of Fame; IRTA Paul St. Martin Distinguished Service Award; IRTA Outstanding Achievement Award; IRTA CBC Lifetime Achievement Award. He is considered the “founding father” of the corporate barter industry and is credited with the invention of the accounts receivable concept that is to this day the basic principle of a Corporate Barter Transaction.

With over 22 years experience in the Barter industry Brian lead the development of many of the new member sales, trading, and franchise training and management systems that has been used as key IP for Bartercard ‘s domestic and international expansion collateral. Brian has held many roles over the years in Bartercard and during his time as the Sales and Marketing Director he developed national sales campaigns which achieved record breaking results of over 725 new member sales in one month, two years running. In the early years of 2000s Brian served as an active director and chairman of the Australasia chapter of the IRTA

Heavily involved in IRTA since its inception. Attended and participated in all early IRTA conventions as well as hosting several in St. Louis. Served on numerous IRTA committees. Was a founding members of NATE and participated in many seminars, and held most elected officer positions. Owned one of the largest mid-west independent trade exchange, and sold it to the largest trade exchange in the country.

He has introduced one of the first International web based trading platforms that includes a loyalty element. He continues to actively support a single currency that would include all members of the Modern Trade and Barter industry.
